The Alaafin of Oyo-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the return of artefacts taken from the Oyo Kingdom by the British in 1895.

“Alaafin Owoade would make sure that the artefacts taken away by the British in 1895 are brought back with some payments,” a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, read.

Nigeria recently secured the return of Benin artefacts looted during the 1897 British expedition. These treasures, which hold cultural, spiritual, and historical significance, were repatriated and handed over to the Oba of Benin.

Speaking further, Oba Owoade emphasized that he had engaged international organizations willing to support his efforts in developing the Oyo Kingdom. He reiterated his resolve to facilitate job creation for unemployed graduates, promising vocational training to equip the youth with skills.

Additionally, he pledged to empower widows and widowers to enhance their socioeconomic well-being. He assured the people that he would continue the legacy of his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, by promoting culture and strengthening the annual Sango and Oranmiyan festivals.

To address the rising trend of migration for better opportunities abroad, Oba Owoade announced plans to equip degree and Higher National Diploma holders with cybersecurity skills.

“What is more, the development of health facilities has been my priority, and I want to be remembered for it during my reign,” he declared.
