Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja. The verdict was delivered on Monday by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

Nwachukwu, arraigned on June 3, 2022, faced a 23-count charge brought by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. The charges included culpable homicide, spousal battery, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation. During the trial, the prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, and presented 25 exhibits.

Nwachukwu, in his defence, testified alongside four witnesses and submitted four exhibits.

Despite pleas for leniency from his counsel, Reginald Nwali, the court sentenced him to death on Count 1. He also received additional sentences ranging from six months to three years on various other counts and was fined a total of N700,000.

Osinachi, aged 42 at the time of her death, rose to fame in 2017 following her collaboration with Prospa Ochimana on the gospel hit “Ekwueme.” After her passing, multiple reports and testimonies from colleagues and family members accused her husband of persistent domestic abuse, which ultimately led to her death.
