The Kano State Government has approved the procurement and distribution of life jackets to riverine communities to enhance safety and protect lives and property in the affected areas.

This was disclosed by Ibrahim Adamu, the Information Officer for Bagwai Local Government Area, in a press statement on Monday. The announcement followed a stakeholders’ meeting on water transportation, held in the state capital and presided over by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol.

According to Engr. Diggol, the decision was prompted by recurring boat accidents in local communities, particularly in the 18 local government areas traversed by rivers. He emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s commitment to improving safety in water transportation.

“The Kano State Government has approved the distribution of life jackets to riverine communities as part of efforts to mitigate boat mishaps that frequently endanger lives and property,” he said.

The commissioner further revealed that the Ministry of Transportation has finalized plans to collaborate with local governments to conduct livelihood and safety surveys. These surveys aim to address the challenges of water transportation and improve safety measures for residents.

Alhaji Abdulmumin Musa Aliyu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, also highlighted the importance of the stakeholders’ meeting. He stated that it was convened to identify challenges associated with water transportation and develop strategies to reduce the high rate of boat accidents.

“This meeting underscores the administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. We urge local government councils to fully support the ministry’s initiatives to achieve these objectives,” Aliyu added.
