Mia le Roux, the historic first deaf Miss South Africa, has pulled out of the Miss Universe finals in Mexico due to health concerns, organizers announced.

Le Roux, 28, made history in August after being crowned Miss South Africa amidst controversy surrounding one finalist’s withdrawal due to trolling over her Nigerian heritage.

After weeks of preparation in Mexico, Le Roux’s last-minute withdrawal means South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant.

In a statement, Le Roux expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to focus on her health, saying, “Making this decision has been incredibly challenging… However, I am deeply grateful to prioritize my health and recovery.”

The Miss South Africa organization pledged support for Le Roux’s recovery, stating, “Her health and well-being are our utmost priority.”

Le Roux has not disclosed the nature of her health issue.
