Mojisola Meranda Officially Assumes Office As New Speaker Of Lagos State House Of Assembly

Mojisola Meranda officially took office today, January 27, as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Meranda was accompanied by her fellow lawmakers, though Obasa was notably absent. After the formal handover ceremony, the legislators gathered for a symbolic group photograph to show their support for her leadership.

In a display of solidarity, the lawmakers praised Meranda’s leadership qualities, chanting, “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.” They also urged her to “speak for Lagos” and carry on with her duties.

The Speaker and her colleagues later convened in her office, where they offered intense prayers to mark the beginning of her tenure.

This transition follows Obasa’s claims that his impeachment was unconstitutional and lacked due process.

Meanwhile, security around the Lagos State House of Assembly has been heightened to ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted legislative activities.

In a notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, staff members and legislative aides were instructed to present valid identity cards to access the premises. The notice stated:
“Following management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied to anyone without a valid ID card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.”
