The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The suspension was approved on Thursday after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions found that she had violated multiple Senate rules.

Presenting the committee’s findings, Chairman Senator Imasuen Neda Bernards stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan was given an opportunity to defend her claims, and testimonies were reviewed to verify her allegations.

The committee highlighted her conduct during a previous session, where she allegedly caused a “chaotic and rowdy” atmosphere by refusing to take her assigned seat and engaging in a verbal exchange.

Senator Raphael Adeyemi Adaramodu, who petitioned against her, testified before the committee, while Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Folorunsho stressed the importance of maintaining Senate regulations.

Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno also emphasized discipline, stating, “Only in the animal kingdom are there no rules and regulations.”

Senator Bassey Aniekun Etim expressed disappointment over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behavior on February 20, describing it as disruptive. However, Minority Leader Abba Moro urged for a reduced suspension of three months instead of six.

Despite the plea, Senate President Akpabio upheld the six-month suspension through a voice vote. He also recalled his personal connection to Akpoti-Uduaghan, revealing that he attended her wedding and even stayed at her home in 2020.

As part of the suspension, she must return all National Assembly property, her security details will be withdrawn, and her office will be sealed by the Sergeant-at-Arms to prevent access.
